They will always attack/hit the highest point. Whenever we walk along the beach and run into them we often have to hold our tripods up or stretch our arms out above our heads. It took the stop-action ability of the camera to prove these little birds mean business. But with this image, you can see proof positive right where the bill of the bird connects and draws blood. It happens so fast that I always thought that it was more for show. The terns would dive-bomb them incessantly. This mother polar bear and her two cubs were scouring the beach looking for eggs and anything else they could find to eat. And in fact, that’s exactly what this arctic tern is doing. Not only do they hold the world record for the longest migration of any bird or animal (26,000 miles round trip), but they also hold the record for being the most aggressive when it comes to protecting their nest sites and chicks. While we were concentrating on the kits he and his partner slowly grazed their way towards us. ![]() This is a large male that found us quite interesting as we were photographing the arctic fox kits. That said, the Svalbard reindeer are definitely not domesticated, but it's possible their ancestors were at one time. Reindeer and Caribou are basically the same animal with reindeer typically referring to caribou who have been domesticated. The Svalbard Reindeer is the second smallest reindeer alive. ![]()
